Pre-arrival activities

To prepare for your course I am going to complete the pre arrival activity to enhance my research skills and my skills in character development.

Activity

Research the story of the famous Nottingham ice skating couple Torvill and Dean. Find out about their journey to 1984 Winter Olympic glory and consider how you might dramatise their story in a feature film. You might choose to dramatise their whole story or one particular aspect of it. Write a bullet point list (also known as an outline) of the 8 key scenes that you would include in your feature film treatment of their story.
You should watch the BBC documentary, Torvill & Dean: The Perfect Day (55 minutes) to get you started.

Key scenes for a feature film

Jayne Torvill
The first key point in the film should be a background story on the female dancer informing the audience of key aspects of her child hood. For example her first time on the ice.
Christopher Dean
I also believe the male skater should also be introduced to the audience and details about his childhood should be given. For example the fact he lived 10 miles from the Nottingham ice rink and would travel on the bus to go skate on almost every day.
Pairing up
Both dancers had previous partners but after meeting at the ice rink Torvill and Dean both had a massive motivation to improve their talent for skating together.
The pressure
After being nominated as the favorites for the next Winter Olympics an important part of the film should be dedicated to the pressure of winning for the dancers and how they handled this expectation to win.
The story behind the dance
The final dance was completely original piece that was completely unique due to its building music and climatic finish which resembled a Romeo and Juliet story line with the dancers being denied love for each other leading to both ending their lives.
The music (Bolero)
The music really made the dance memorable to the audience and I think is an important part of their success so should defiantly be included in the feature film.
The romance
A big part of the interest on the young couple was not knowing if their relationship was completely on the ice. people wanted to know if they where actually in love. This gained the dancers lots of popularity from audiences.
The Olympics triumph (1984 in Sarajevo)
The whole film should lead to this moment where the UK athletes won gold at the Olympics and really left and incredible story of how they got there.
